Rasulullah SAW with in a long of his life, for meeting the people always said Salaam. Salaam in Islam means peace and greetings which Muslims uses in everyday life as like to become a good muslims.
The rule in Islam is that when we are offered a greeting, we return it with a better one, or with its equal at least. Allah SWT orders in the Qur'an: "When a greeting is offered you, answer it with an even better greeting, or (at least) with its like. God keeps count of all things." (Surah an-Nur; 4: 86)
Our Prophet Muhammad was sitting one day with his Companions (Sahabah) and they were talking together. A person came in without asking permission and didn't even offer his Salaam (Islamic Greeting).
"Why didn't you say Salaam (Peace be on you)?" and "Why didn't you ask permission to come in?" questioned Prophet Muhammad SAW. "Go back. Ask our permission and greet us with your Salaam (Peace be on you) before you come in," Prophet Muhammad SAW instructed.
Regarding Salaam (Islamic Greeting), Prophet Muhammad SAW has told us:
“O Muslims! You will not enter Paradise unless you are kind to each other, unless you warmly say Salaam (Peace be on you) to each other whenever you meet.”. Salaam will make your relation with other person can closer. There is a Ukuwah Islamiyah among the people, special for moeslims in the world. Futhermore, always say Salaam (Peace be on you) in a loud voice and reply in the same way, Allah will always bless us and give up happy feeling to each other.
Allah (SWT) loves most the person who says Salaam (Peace be on you) first and gives him better rewards and blessings. First, give your Salaam (Peace be on you), then say whatever you have to say.
Prophet Muhammad SAW said: "When you meet each other then initiate greeting (Salaam) and embrace; and when you separate from each other, then depart with seeking forgiveness."
The better greeting and reply are illustrated in the following Hadith. Umar (radiAllahu anhu) reports that he was riding with Abu Bakr (radiAllahu anhu) on one mount. When they passed by people, Abu Bakr (radiAllahu anhu) greeted them saying: 'Assalamu alaikum' and they replied: 'Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatu Allah.' Or he may greet them saying: 'Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatu Allah,' for which their reply was: 'Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatu Allah wa barakatuh.' Abu Bakr (radiAllahu anhu) commented: "Today, people have gained much more than us." (Sahih al-Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad). (taken from Adil Salahi written).
The word 'Salaam', which means peace, is also a name of Allah. Using it in our greeting is a constant reminder of the special relation between a believer and Allah. It means that, the word Salam has strong meaning for people life. This greeting should be familiarized for our children and students. Because, salaam can help muslim community become closer.
Morethan this, a Hadith reported by Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) who quotes the Prophet as saying: 'A Muslim has a right against his fellow Muslim in six ways.' Asked what were these, the Prophet said:
(1)When you meet him, greet him; (2) if he invites you, accept his invitation; (3) if he seeks your advice, give him an honest and sincerely advice; (4) if he sneezes and praises God, bless him; (5) if he falls ill, visit him; and (6) if he dies, attend his funeral.' (Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim).
So, in conclusion, say Salaam or answer it, is one of the six ways for muslim become a good muslim. InsyaAllah… .
